Inspired by: The Birth of Venus
Sandro Botticelli, 1485

MAKERS NOTES:
Black to teal thermal pigment used to represent the dark foreground and aqua blue ocean/sky in the background. Flakies used are reminiscent of rosy, golden, and pearl hued crushed seashells in ode to the shell Venus emerges from, as well as the falling flowers, and the cloak in which she is about to be draped in. Red to orange shifting aurora shimmer creates a warm glow and lit from within look that is representing a quintessential aspect of Renaissance paintings. Gold holo reflects light like the sun on the ocean and the twinkling of Venus’s lush locks.

ARTWORK HISTORY:
The Birth of Venus depicts a bare-naked Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, arriving on land, on the island of Cyprus, born of the sea spray and blown there by the winds emerging from a giant scallop shell. It embodies the rebirth of civilization, a new hope, geopolitical, social and cultural shift which occurred after the Middle Age turmoil.

Inspired by: Heart (Patterned)
Andy Warhol, 1979-1980

MAKERS NOTES:
This print reminded me of a Valentine’s Day box of chocolates with emo vibes. A black to red to pink thermal pigment is used to represent the fading of the cold black surrounding and the vibrant pink within. The red/pink/purple iridescent flakes add vibrancy and texture of the pink sections and the black micro flakes represent the overlapping shadowed elements.

Inspired by: Hearts Pink
Andy Warhol, 1962

MAKER’S NOTES:
Pink and white hearts used as literal representation of the hearts in Warhol’s print. Iridescent glitters take inspiration from the print’s ombre background. They reflect a rainbow of colors as lighting shifts and when layered over different base colors.

ARTWORK HISTORY:
Warhol’s use of heart motifs follows lineage of his earlier engagement with the discussion on desire and human emotion- a sustained and reoccurring theme of Warhol’s oeuvre. His engagement with the heart motif can be traced back to his early drawings in the 1950s. Hearts often appeared as “whimsical, romantic, or erotic attributes” in his art.

TRI-THERMAL MAGNETIC:

Dark purple (cold) to indigo (warm) to purple/pink (hot) with purple/fuchsia aurora, purple sparkles, & silver magnetic.

Warm color appears at 82 degrees Fahrenheit, hot color appears at 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Activate magnetic effect: While the polish is still wet, use a magnet to activate the magnetic pigment. Keep the magnet in place for at least 60 seconds while the polish dries.

You can try these methods:

  • For a linear cat-eye effect | Hover the magnet over the wet nail as close as possible, or paint the nail while your finger rests on top of the magnet.

  • For a curved cat-eye curved effect | Use the side of the magnet to carve out a curve or swirl.

  • For velvet effect | Hover the magnet around the nail starting at the bottom and moving to the sides and top, use multiple magnets placed together to create a box with finger placed in the middle, or use a 20-30 lb. horseshoe magnet.

  • For reverse velvet effect | Place your nail on the side of a horseshoe magnet.
